DAVENPORT RIDGE WEEKLY PTO UPDATE 4/24/17

COME TO THE COSI FUNDRAISER TONIGHT!

Tonight, Cosi on High Ridge Road is donating 25% of all meals ordered to Davenport’s Outdoor Classroom between 5:00 and 8 p.m. When ordering you need to inform them that you are with Davenport Ridge. Bring a copy of the flyer that got sent home to ensure that your meal will go towards the donation. For additional copies, click here.

EARTH DAY CELEBRATIONS A SUCCESS!

Thanks to everyone who helped make last week’s Earth Day celebrations a success. Be on the lookout for the No Idling signs on the drop off and pick up line. Did you know that Connecticut law prohibits vehicles of all kinds from unnecessary idling for more than three minutes?

  • An idling vehicle emits 20 times more pollution than one traveling at 30 miles per hour.
  • Every gallon of gasoline burned produces more than 20 pounds of greenhouse gases!

Everyone can make a difference and help make the Earth a better place to live!

GATOR ALLEY THIS THURSDAY AND FRIDAY!

Our Spring Gator Alley will be held this Thursday, April 27th and this Friday, April 28th. Kids will be able to buy small items priced from .50 to $5.00. VOLUNTEERS ARE STILL NEEDED. Please click here to sign up for available spots!

GATOR PRIDE DAY!

This Friday, April 28th is our monthly Gator Pride Day! Wear your green and white or any of your Davenport spirit gear as we celebrate our school pride.

STAFF APPRECIATION WEEK

The teachers and staff at Davenport aim to provide the best environment for our kids to learn and grow. Please help us in providing them with an unforgettable Staff Appreciation celebration to let them know how thankful we are for their positive impact on our children.  This year, Staff Appreciation Week runs from May 1st through May 5th and we are asking parents to volunteer their time or to send in a monetary donation to offset the costs. To learn more about what types of events we are planning and to sign up to volunteer, click here. If you decide to make a monetary donation, please send in whatever amount you are comfortable with in an envelope labeled “STAFF APPRECIATION.” If you have any questions, contact Jeannette Gromko.

PT COUNCIL NEWS

The budget process has moved steadily along, as seen in last week’s Advocate article.
As the article mentions, the spending increase for next year has been reduced to 2.2%.  Superintendent Kim provided an explanation for the reduction, and we felt it was important to share this with you. From a parent standpoint, the current budget doesn’t contain much that is new; rather, it maintains many existing programs and initiatives.  That said:
  1. Taxes were kept down through application of budget principles that included “reallocation before addition”
  2. 6 new in-district programs for students with disabilities were created thereby reducing some out-of-district costs
  3. Existing class sizes will be maintained (in keeping with class size guidelines) and in some cases, class size will be intentionally reduced based on student needs
  4. SPS received more in capital project money than had initially been allotted and have applied for a second $2MM Alliance Capital Grant
  5. Funds have been allocated for SHS’s IB program PD (requisite to opening IB Diploma program in SY1018-19).  This provides for our students who have had an IB program in middle school the opportunity to continue that course of study in High School.  Funds are for required PD.
  6.  If federal and state grants continue, after-school programs will continue.  These grants are, however, in play. If there are cuts, on the order of just 1%, it will result in the loss of academic intervention services that have contributed to the improvement in 9 of 12 State Accountability indicators.
